Canadian Pacific : Creating a Brand, Building a Nation

Canadian Pacific : Creating a Brand, Building a NationCategory: Canadian Pacific AirlinesAn unprecedented look at Canada's history: How commercial design helped shape the country's image Up to now virtually nothing has been published about Canadian Pacific's decisive role in "branding" the nation at home and abroad. The company's visionary leaders used the railway line's potential to its fullest, swiftly creating a pioneering global travel and transportation empire, for several decades the world's biggest. As Canada's main private land owner, Canadian Pacific became a key sponsor of immigration. These and numerous other activities were publicized with unparalleled proficiency and quality, projecting a dream-like world of the new state that became part of its identity. Never before or after has a single company influenced a nation and its image to such an extent. The book takes the reader on a colorful, delightful and educational journey brought to life by hundreds of historical illustrations and photos, many of which have never been published before. Utmost care was taken in digitally restoring and reproducing the priceless Canadiana as accurately as possible. This volume also demonstrates how a uniquely Canadian graphic design style developed over time, the essence of which can be felt in Canadian design until this day. The making of modern Canada is unimaginable without Canadian Pacific and its lasting achievements.

    Pacific Southwest Airlines

Pacific Southwest AirlinesCategory: Canadian Pacific AirlinesWith its low fares and friendly service, Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) was one of the most successful regional airlines in American history. Its distinctive orange, red, and white planes, complete with a beaming smile were immediately recognizable to those living on the West Coast. The airline was also known for employing beautiful and sociable flight attendants. Kenny Friedkin, the founder of PSA, started in 1949 with one leased DC-3 and expanded his fleet to serve millions of passengers each year. Although PSA is no longer in operation, its successful business model of low-priced, efficient service was copied by other airlines and today is considered the norm. In addition, former PSA employees still gather annually to relive the camaraderie they experienced as being a part of one of the most unique airlines of all time.

    The Railway Beat

The Railway BeatCategory: Canadian Pacific AirlinesCanadian Pacific at its apex operated the most expansive and comprehensive transportation system the world has ever seen, before or since. Vast amounts of freight and multitudes of people, including some of the 20th century's most important and celebrated personalities, moved seamlessly back and forth on the North American continent and across the oceans to the far corners of the earth in the capable hands of a single, well-oiled administration. When the Canadian Pacific Railway was built in the early 1880s to connect the thriving cities of Eastern Canada with the fledgling communities on the West Coast of British Columbia, however, this first, tenuous lifeline of the wildly ambitious enterprise stretched across more than two thousand miles of rugged, nearly uninhabited wilderness -- with no blanket authority or viable system of law enforcement. Initially the country's own red-coated mounted police force took up the challenge of protecting the men and women who accomplished the national dream of forging a link from sea to sea and beyond; but, inevitably, the responsibility for the security of people and goods on the "World's Greatest Transportation System" would fall to the Canadian Pacific itself and the private police force which grew up with the company. From its somewhat disreputable origins of ad-hoc groups of semi-autonomous armed watchmen and strike-breaking thugs organized at the local level to the fully-professional force created in 1913 by the CPR president himself, the stage was set for more than a century of Canadian Pacific Police Services to come. The quiet efficiency with which its officers have conducted themselves in their ongoing battles with fraud, theft, smuggling, bombings, murder and mayhem, and the degree to which they have managed to avoid controversy and public scrutiny, speak well for the men and women on the "Railway Beat."
