Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Gary Bartz (saxophone); Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Christian McBride (bass instrument); Lewis Nash (drums).Recording information: Avatar, New York, New York (11/18/2003 - 11/19/2003).ILLUMINATIONS finds McCoy Tyner, some 40 years after his best-known work (as a member of John Coltrane's legendary early-1960s quartet), still kicking. Tyner's energies as a session leader, composer, and ever-progressive musician haven't flagged since the mid-'60's, when the pianist started heading his own dates. On this 2004 album, as per usual, Tyner has surrounded himself with some of the finest personnel in jazz, including bassist Christian McBride, sax player Gary Bartz, and trumpeter Terence Blanchard.Tyner's music is appealing for its balance of familiar hard-bop vocabulary and intricately wrought structures--it is rhythmic and accessible, yet intellectually engaging. Tyner plays with great vigor, mixing virtuoso classical flourishes with bold chords and dazzlingly complex solos. His compositions here touch on avant-bebop ("The Chase"), Latin groove ("Angelina"), and smooth swing (the title track--on which all the musicians get a chance to stretch out). Blanchard's playing is especially notable, substantiating the melody lines in the chorus and blazing on the solos (as on "New Orleans Stomp," driven by a classic second-line beat). The high quality of music here--in conception and execution--should come as no surprise to long-time fans of Tyner or his sidemen.Category: Free Saxophone Quartet MusicMccoy Tyner - Illuminations (SACD NEW)Label: TelarcFormat: SACDRelease Date: 22 Jun 2004No. of Discs: 1UPC: 089408359965Details1. The works of African American composers such as Hale Smith are often mistakenly classified as jazz. However, classical aficionados will appreciate the complexity and grace of Hale's music. Its contemporary, urban sound makes it a natural descendent of the classical music of the past.Throughout his career, Hale was certainly involved in the jazz scene, collaborating with such luminaries as Eric Dolphy and Ahmad Jamal, and the influence they've had on his music is easily heard in pieces like "Variations a Due" for saxophone and cello. The smoky horn melodies would sound perfect on a film noir soundtrack or in a jazz club. "Innerflexions" turns a symphony orchestra into a big band par excellence. In addition to working with jazz greats, Hale is responsible for arranging spirituals for singers such as Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman, and this talent for arrangement is part of what makes this album's music so memorable.Category: Free Saxophone Quartet MusicMUSIC OF HALE SMITH

Personnel includes: William Hooker (drums); Roy Nathanson (saxophone); Andrea Parkins (accordion, keyboards); Jason Hwang (violin, electronics).Includes liner notes by William Hooker. As a distinctively original drummer, William Hooker has made an indelible mark on the New York music scene, playing with everyone from David S. Ware to Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo over the course of his long career. THE BLACK MASK, Hooker's first studio outing of the 21st century, finds him pushing the boundaries of modern jazz ever further. As Roy Nathanson's questing sax lines interact with Jason Hwang's cascading electronics and Hooker's own muscular drumming, one is reminded of the glory days of 1960s NYC free jazz a la Archie Shepp, Sunny Murray, et al.However, not only is ELEVATED no throwback to improv's past, it's a bold step into the future of experimental music. Alternately turbulent and contemplative, this is "jazz" only in the sense that it features traditional jazz instruments working in an extemporal mode. Ultimately, this is contemporary American music; full of fire but informed by a sense of structure that allows dramatic moments to build, stormy passages to ebb and flow, and tonal lyricism to pervade even the most frictional scenario.Category: Free Saxophone Quartet MusicBLACK MASK [WILLIAM HOOKER]
