Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Gary Bartz (saxophone); Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Christian McBride (bass instrument); Lewis Nash (drums).Recording information: Avatar, New York, New York (11/18/2003 - 11/19/2003).ILLUMINATIONS finds McCoy Tyner, some 40 years after his best-known work (as a member of John Coltrane's legendary early-1960s quartet), still kicking. Tyner's energies as a session leader, composer, and ever-progressive musician haven't flagged since the mid-'60's, when the pianist started heading his own dates. On this 2004 album, as per usual, Tyner has surrounded himself with some of the finest personnel in jazz, including bassist Christian McBride, sax player Gary Bartz, and trumpeter Terence Blanchard.Tyner's music is appealing for its balance of familiar hard-bop vocabulary and intricately wrought structures--it is rhythmic and accessible, yet intellectually engaging. Tyner plays with great vigor, mixing virtuoso classical flourishes with bold chords and dazzlingly complex solos. His compositions here touch on avant-bebop ("The Chase"), Latin groove ("Angelina"), and smooth swing (the title track--on which all the musicians get a chance to stretch out). Blanchard's playing is especially notable, substantiating the melody lines in the chorus and blazing on the solos (as on "New Orleans Stomp," driven by a classic second-line beat). The high quality of music here--in conception and execution--should come as no surprise to long-time fans of Tyner or his sidemen.Category: Recording TrumpetMccoy Tyner - Illuminations (SACD NEW)Label: TelarcFormat: SACDRelease Date: 22 Jun 2004No. of Discs: 1UPC: 089408359965Details1. Accompanied by the likes of Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter and Cannonball Adderly, Miles weaves thoughtful, lyrical lines in and out of these tunes. He's equally effective at finding the heart of his own compositions ("Blue in Green," "Circle") and those of others ("Stella by Starlight," Shorter's "Fall"). As always, it's his taste and restraint as much as his inventiveness that makes Davis' approach work, and never more so than on ballads like the ones contained in this solid collection.Category: Recording TrumpetPlays Classic Ballads

Banco De Gaia includes: Toby Marks, Jennifer Folkes, Ted Duggan.Recorded at New World Bank, Somerset, England; The Great Pyramid At Giza, Egypt; The Temple Of Seti 1, Thebes, Egypt.Toby Marks, aka Banco de Gaia, has gone from strength to strength with each successive recording. Leaving his trancey roots far behind, the sizzling morphed worldwide grooves of IGIZEH reveals Marks' finest document yet. Forget the concept of 'fourth-world' music: this is 'multi-world' music, sounds extracted from far-flung cultures and even farther-flung machinery. The pumping synths and whooshing jungle strings of "Seti I," complete with Indian chant, could be the track aboard Voyager that sets extraterrestrial visitors on an immediate sortee to Earth. "Creme Egg" uses tribal drumbeats and whirring electronics in making its presence known, while the electronic vocalizing, exotic percussive accents and pocket trumpet sounds of "Gizeh" sound like they arose out of the seventh circle of hell. And if things weren't psychedelic enough, Marks pulls out all the stops on the Calcutta cybercafe calculus of "How Much Reality Can You Take?," which positions techno-trance music as the penultimate sound of the casbah. Turn on, tune in, bliss out.Category: Recording TrumpetIGIZEH

Brecker and arranger Gil Goldstein brought together musicians from NY, Miami, Brazil and South Africa to form a unit which manages to maintain a spontaneous feel within some extremely challenging and modern arrangements. "Grey Area" employs the talents of guitarist Adam Rogers to give the track a hard-edged fusion sound reminiscent of early Brecker Brothers music.
