The Yokohama squash had a brief burst of popularity in America in the late 19th century after being introduced here by Thomas Hogg, Jr., a horticulturalist and government official who lived in Yokohama. At their New York nursery, Hogg and his brother James developed one of the best collections of Asiatic plants of the day. But the Yokohama fell out of fashion and languished in obscurity until Baker Creek founder Jere Gettle tracked down seeds and brought it back in 2000.
