The Communist Manifesto : The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844; Socialism: Utopian and ScientificCategory: Working ConditionIn a world where capitalism is no longer held in check by fear of a communist alternative, The Communist Manifesto (with Socialism Utopian and Scientific, Engels's brief and clear exposition of Marxist thought) is essential reading. The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 is Engels's first, and probably best-known, book.

The Condition of the Working Class in England

The Condition of the Working Class in EnglandCategory: Working ConditionThe Condition of the Working Class is the best-known work of Engels, and in many ways still the best study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels's first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. The fluency of his writing, the personal nature of his insights, and his talent for mordant satire combine to make this account of the life of the victims of early industrial change into a classic - a historical study that parallels and complements the fictional works of the time by such writers as Gaskell and Dickens. What Cobbett had done for agricultural poverty in his Rural Rides, Engels did - and more - in this work on the plight of the industrial workers in the England of the early 1840s. This edition includes the prefaces to the English and American editions, and a map of Manchester c.1845.

The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 - eBook

The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 - eBookCategory: Working ConditionFriedrich Engels (1820-1895) is ranked alongside Karl Marx as one of the founders and developers of the Communist movement. Throughout his life he was active in various areas of writing, social science, political theory, and philosophy, authoring and co-authoring very significant works such as "The Communist Manifesto" with Marx. His own 1845 work, "The Condition of the Working-Class in England", was Engel's first work, written after he spent two years in Manchester working as a businessman by day and a revolutionary activist by night. The book provides a graphic illustration of the Industrial Revolution and its negative effects on mill and factory laborers. Engels drew material from his own observations and detailed reports that reflected the disease and mortality rates of workers in rural areas and large cities. This classic Victorian social criticism made Engels extremely popular in his day, and has cemented a place for him in literary, philosophical, and political history.

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels on Communism and the Condition of the Working Class in England (Illustrated) - eBook

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels on Communism and the Condition of the Working Class in England (Illustrated) - eBookCategory: Working ConditionThe book has an active table of contents for readers to access each chapter of the following titles directly.1. THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO – Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels2. The Condition of the Working Class in England - Friedrich EngelsIn the title of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO, Marx and Engels presented an analytical approach to the class struggle and the problems of capitalism. THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO also contains their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism. However, the book is lack of detailed potential future forms of communism. In contrast to a great concept and abstraction of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO, THE CONDITION OF THE WORKING CLASS IN ENGLAND by co-founder of Marxism Friedrich Engels is the principal source of studying the industrial working class in Victorian England and origination of the thoughts of communism. In the book THE CONDITION OF THE WORKING CLASS IN ENGLAND, Engels argued that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off and provided the numbers to show that in large industrial cities such as Manchester and Liverpool, mortality due to various disease was four times that in the surrounding countryside. Engels also discussed both the workers' wages and their living conditions and showed that the industrial workers had lower incomes than their pre-industrial peers and that the works lived in more unhealthy and unpleasant environments. Engels' argument proved to be extremely influential with British historians of the industrial revolution and to be a very wide-ranging critique of industrialization. The work is also credited by Marxist historians who studied the industrial revolution in the twentieth century as one of the great works of studying early capitalism in England. After Marx and Engels, it was Lenin who took the theories of THE COMMUNIST MANIFEST and THE CONDITION OF THE WORKING CLASS IN ENGLAND to the next level for delivery and implementation of a truly socialistic country. Marx’s thought and Lenin’s path of building Soviets to address issues of Capitalism were catastrophic to the world. An estimated 70 million people died under the soviet regime. The human cost paid for their utopian theories was enormous. Yet despite all this, Marx’s thought is still worshipped by millions by other countries including North Korea and the aged followers in China today. All of the essential predications by Marx in the book about world moving direction failed. However, history is a mirror for us. Reading the book, THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO and THE CONDITION OF THE WORKING CLASS IN ENGLAND, we can have a second thought on evolution of our social systems and avoid paying human cost we made in the past by socialistic countries

The Condition of the Working Class in England (Illustrated Edition) - eBook

The Condition of the Working Class in England (Illustrated Edition) - eBookCategory: Working ConditionFriedrich Engels (November 28, 1820 August 5, 1895) was a German industrialist, social scientist, author, political theorist, philosopher, and father of Marxist theory, working in close collaboration alongside Karl Marx. In 1845, he published The Condition of the Working Class in England, based on personal observations and research. In 1848, he produced with Marx The Communist Manifesto and later he supported Marx financially to do research and write Das Kapital. After Marx's death Engels edited the second and third volumes. Additionally, Engels organized Marx's notes on the "Theories of Surplus Value" and this was later published as the "fourth volume" of Capital. Engels is commonly known as a "ruthless party tactician", "brutal ideologue", and "master tactician" when it came to purging rivals in political organizations. However, another strand of Engelss personality was one of a "gregarious", "big-hearted", and "jovial man of outsize appetites", who was referred to by his son-in-law as "the great beheader of champagne bottles. This edition of Engels The Condition of the Working Class in England is specially formatted with a Table of Contents and illustrations.

The Communist Manifesto: The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844; Socialism: Utopian and Scientific - eBookCategory: Working ConditionWith an introduction by Dr. Laurence Marlow.A spectre is haunting Europe (and the world). Not, in the twenty-first century, the spectre of communism, but the spectre of capitalism. Marx's prediction that the state would wither away of its own accord has proved inaccurate, and he did not foresee the tyrannies which have ruled large parts of the globe in his name. Indeed, he would have been appalled if he had witnessed them. But his analysis of the evils and dangers of raw capitalism is as correct now as when it was written, and some of his suggestions (progressive income tax, abolition of child labour, free education for all children) are now accepted with little question. In a world where capitalism is no longer held in check by fear of a communist alternative, The Communist Manifesto (with Socialism Utopian and Scientific, Engels's brief and clear exposition of Marxist thought) is essential reading. The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 is Engels's first, and probably best-known, book. With Henry Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor, it was and is the outstanding study of the working class in Victorian England.

The Condition Of The Working-Class In England In 1844 (Mobi Classics) - eBookCategory: Working ConditionThe Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels.Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle. Prior to the introduction of mills (1779-1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five. After the introduction of mills the figure rose to 4,738. Prior to the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old. After the introduction of mills the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000It is considered by many to be a classic account of the condition of the industrial working class. It was originally addressed to a German audience. The eldest son of a successful German textile industrialist, Engels became involved in radical journalism as a teenager. Sent to England, what he saw made him even more radical. About this time he formed his life-long intellectual partnership with Karl Marx. Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
